Speeches - in class presentations

Our speeches are quickly approaching and I know everyone has been practising a lot at home in preperation. Next week, Week 5, we will be starting our presentations in class and this will continue into Week 6. The reason our speeches will go over 2 weeks is because with all the extra activities going on such as Science, Drama and ICAS we are going to struggle to get through everyone. I have said to students that they all need to be prepared since it will be random selection to make it fair.

Once everyone has presented we will announce the four finalists from our class who will then go on to compete against the other Year 6 finalists in the Semi finals in Week 7 and then if they make it through the Yr 5/6 Grandfinal in Week 8.

I am so excited, as are the class, to hear everyone's presentations! Good luck everyone!

School Photos

YEARS 1 – 6 STUDENT PHOTOS MONDAY, 15^th AUGUST

 

Please be advised that this year’s student photos for Years 1 – 6 will be held on Monday, 15^thAugust.

 

This week your teacher will distribute your child’s photo order envelope. If you would like to order photos, please either:

 

1.    Order online, using your “Shoot Key”, paying by credit card (please see instructions outlined on the envelope)

2.    Select the photo pack on the envelope and pay by using the Credit Card slip – complete the credit card details on the envelope, tear off the slip and enclose it in the envelope

3.    Select the photo pack on the envelope and pay by cash, enclosing the money in the envelope.

 

PLEASE NOTE THAT CHEQUES ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTED FOR PAYMENT

 

If you do not wish to order a photo of your child, you are still required to return the envelope to your teacher before your photo day. ALL ENVELOPES MUST BE RETURNED TO YOUR CLASS TEACHER.

 

Siblings Photos

 

Sibling photos are available to order. Sibling order envelopes are available for collection at the office and must be returned to the office ASAP BEFORE PHOTO DAY.

 

Important

 

All children are required to wear the full school uniform. NO FACTION SHIRTS ALLOWED.

 

Please ensure that hair is neat and tidy and long hair is tied back.

 

Year 6 Students

 

Year 6 students will be advised separately regarding uniform requirements for photo day.

Young Writer's Competition

For any of our amazing young writers, there is a writing competition currently happening relating to our book week theme 'Australia; Story Country'. For anyone who is interested, you must write an original story of poem relating to this year's theme in no more than 500 words.

Enteries opened last Sunday and will close Friday 26th August at 4pm. There are 2 age categories (you must include your age on your application) and some BIG prizes to win. I encourage everyone to give it a go!

Olympics - Inquiry

As part of our inquiry unit this semester, "Our diverse and changing world", we have been looking at the Olympics. On Wednesday afternoons we are pairing up with Room 14 to do a lot of research based tasks. So far we have:
-Discussed what Olympism is
-Researched Pierre de Courbetin (who introduced the modern Olympics)
-Investigated and compared the Ancient Olympics to the Modern Olympics
-Created fact files on Brazil

Diary Dates Term 3 Week 3

SPEECHES:
Over the last 2 weeks I have allowed students to use their reading time as part of their preperation time for speeches. From this week on, students should be reading through their speeches each night as well as reading a novel/book of their choice. Some students have asked if they can continue research on their Prime Minister for reading and that is absolutely fine, as long as they keep note of what resources they are using for their bibliographies.

Diary Dates Term 3 Week 1

SPEECH:
Over the holidays students were asked to come up with a topic for their upcoming speech and if possible write a draft. Over the past week I have asked students to continue on their drafts which they brought in on Friday to get feedback from a partner on. Students were also given a rubric on Friday that they will be marked on to help them prepare.

Over the course of this week, in class we will be looking at and analysing a range of different types of speeches. At home students should be using the information they are learning in class to help tweak their own speeches and hopefully finalise their speech by Friday.

ICAS:
The ICAS English test is fast approaching, next Tuesday, so we will be focusing a lot of comprehension this week and preparing students for the format of the test.

SPELLING TERM 3 and 4:
To help students to take responsibility for their own learning and prepare for high school, we are giving students more autonomy with their spelling this semester. I am allowing students to select what activity they would like to do each night that will help them learn their spelling words the best. Obviously they can look over other activities they have previously done or they make be drawn to particular activities in general. Obviously the results of how well they have chosen and prepared will show through in their spelling tests.

PREGNANT:
As I announced on Friday to the students, I am pregnant with my second child. I am currently 13 weeks and plan to still go on camp and finish out the year since I will be due 31st January. I was incredibly excited to tell the class and relieved that I will be able to finish out the year with our lovely class.
