Hi Everyone
Just a reminder for Year 6 students. The Graduation dinner starts at 6pm sharp in our undercover area next Wednesday (14th) and concludes at 9pm. Parents are invited to “appear” at 8.45 for a dance with your son/daughter.
Then, on Thursday 15th, ALL YEAR 6 students head for Warwick Super Bowl for 2 games of bowling! We will eat lunch AT SCHOOL and then depart for Warwick at 11.30am.
The school canteen is closed on this day!
The canteen at bowling however, will be open for snacks and drinks – please no more than $15.00 spending money.
We will depart Warwick at 2.30 and be back for a final farewell.

Christmas Party and last session with Buddies - MONDAY

Dear Room 17 Parents
our class have requested to have a Christmas Party next week where everyone brings in a plate of food to share and we watch a Christmas movie before swapping our Secret Santa presents.

Due to so many teachers having to move classrooms to prepare for next year, Monday is the only day we are able to do it. We would really appreciate if you could please provide a plate of food to share on Monday around 12pm - preferably not lollies or soft drink.

We will also have our last session with our Buddies on Monday, so students please don't forget to bring your Christmas Cards for your Buddies!!!!!

Kind regards
Lee Geelhoed

Perth Writer's Festival

As part of a new initiative that Perth Writer's Festival are running as part of their 2017 Family Day, they are on the hunt for 8 young curators between the ages of 10-12 to take over one of the stages. The successful applicants will work with a group of authors and have the opportunity to design sessions for them.

The link is below if any of you are interested in applying.

Rabbit Proof Fence - please email if you wish your child to not watch!

Dear Parents,

As part of the History Curriculum this semester, the students have been learning about democracy and how certain community groups in time have experienced  limited citizenship rights. We have organised for the students to view the Rabbit Proof fence movie which focuses on the stolen generation of Indigenous Australians. This move is rated PG as it has adult themes of child abduction. Please let one of the Year 6 teachers know if you feel uncomfortable about your child watching this movie as we can organise another activity for them in the library.

Remembrance Day - this Friday!

Remembrance Day in Australia is annually observed on 11th November although it is not a public holiday. This event remembers those who died as a result of war, particularly from World War I onwards.

Remembrance Day 2016 is on at Wembley Primary, Friday, 11th November with a minutes silence observed at 11am.

Red poppies are worn on blazers, shirts, jumpers and other items of clothing on Remembrance Day to remember those who died during a war. During the First World War, red poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium.
Students can purchase a Red Poppy for a gold coin donation. They will be on sale in the quad before school

Poetry template

As part of our writing this term students are looking at poetry. In class we will be analysing different poems, completing comprehension activities relating to poetry and of course writing our own poems. We have been revising our knowledge of figurative language this week and students have started brainstorming different phrases (figurative language) to use in a poem about camp that will be coming up.

Today we focused on metaphors and similes. Students were required to write a poem about their family using the framework below. Some students need to complete these poems as part of their homework tonight, whilst majority of the class finished them during class time. The poems were very sweet and well thought out! I recommend you ask your child to read their poem to you if they can.

Line 1: My family is like _____.
Line 2: My (first family member) is a ______,
Line 3: Explain the metaphor.
Line 4: My (second family member) is a ______,
Line 5: Explain the metaphor.
Line 6: My (third family member) is a ______,
Line 7: Explain the metaphor.
Line 8: My (fourth family member) is a ______,
Line 9: Explain the metaphor.
Line 10: Repeat line 1.
Line 11: Explain the simile.

Flextangle fun

Last term as a fun end to my Maths Class we made flextangles. I had originally made mine in paper and thought it would be better to give students cardboard to make theirs. Unfortunately the cardboard was very stiff and hard for the students to make. Since then several students have asked me about the paper one I made. On the weekend I also found a link to a pokemon one! I have attached both below. It's a great hands on activity and the students seem to really enjoy. I have attached the links below to the templates for anyone who would like to print them at home.

Project on Harvey WA - to be completed at school and home DUE WEEK 10

Next week our class will be starting a project on Harvey WA that will be completed in class and as part of homework. I have booked the ipads and computer next week to ensure we are making a strong start with our research next week. Below I have included a copy of the sheet students will receive in case they leave it at school they can still access it from home. We will begin this in Monday.

HARVEY WA

Over the next few weeks, as part of your class work and your homework, you will be completing a booklet about Harvey WA. Camp Mornington lies on the outskirts of Harvey, so this project will give you a good insight into the area, as well as, the history, industries, attractions and geography of the area.

You are to research the following facts on the South West town next week (Week 7) and then put together a booklet that can be handwritten or typed (only if you have a computer at home and a USB to bring to and from school). A hard copy of your booklet will be due in Week 10.

What your booklet should be made up of:

Location – include a map

History – include first settlers and aboriginal heritage

Industries           – Dairy (Harvey Fresh)

                                - Fruits (Harvey Fresh)

                                - Beef (Harvey Fresh)

                                -Bauxite (Alcoa Wagerup)

                                - Water (S.W Irrigation)

Attractions – Include a paragraph and picture of each

                                -The Big Orange

                                -Harvey Weir

                                -Internment Camp/Shrine

                                -Harvey Cheese

                                -Mornington Camp

Extension –

Marron – Research and write something about marron. You may be given the opportunity to catch and release one at camp.

Snakes – We hope we don’t see any of these!!! Look at what snakes inhabit this area and an action plan of what to do if someone was bitten.

Mrs Goyder

Dear Room 17 families,
All students were told today, and a note in the newsletter has also gone home, that Mrs Goyder is on extended sick leave. We were notified today that she is quite unwell and will potentially require surgery this week. That means that she won't be here for the Mass Choir performance, however she has left several teachers in charge to ensure it all goes smoothly. Obviously this is quite a shock for Mrs Goyder and we are sending her all our best wishes at this difficult time.
