Olympics - Inquiry

As part of our inquiry unit this semester, "Our diverse and changing world", we have been looking at the Olympics. On Wednesday afternoons we are pairing up with Room 14 to do a lot of research based tasks. So far we have:
-Discussed what Olympism is
-Researched Pierre de Courbetin (who introduced the modern Olympics)
-Investigated and compared the Ancient Olympics to the Modern Olympics
-Created fact files on Brazil

Below is a couple of videos we have watched in class.
1. This video shows a general/fun summary of the Ancient Olympics that we used as an introduction

2. This video was a motivational video of one of our Australian swimmers that shows the importance of resilience

From this week on, students should be reading through their speeches each night as well as reading a novel/book of their choice. Diary Dates Term 3 Week 1

SPEECH:
Over the holidays students were asked to come up with a topic for their upcoming speech and if possible write a draft. Over the past week I have asked students to continue on their drafts which they brought in on Friday to get feedback from a partner on. Students were also given a rubric on Friday that they will be marked on to help them prepare.

Over the course of this week, in class we will be looking at and analysing a range of different types of speeches. At home students should be using the information they are learning in class to help tweak their own speeches and hopefully finalise their speech by Friday.

ICAS:
The ICAS English test is fast approaching, next Tuesday, so we will be focusing a lot of comprehension this week and preparing students for the format of the test.

SPELLING TERM 3 and 4:
To help students to take responsibility for their own learning and prepare for high school, we are giving students more autonomy with their spelling this semester. I am allowing students to select what activity they would like to do each night that will help them learn their spelling words the best. Obviously they can look over other activities they have previously done or they make be drawn to particular activities in general. Obviously the results of how well they have chosen and prepared will show through in their spelling tests.

PREGNANT:
As I announced on Friday to the students, I am pregnant with my second child. I am currently 13 weeks and plan to still go on camp and finish out the year since I will be due 31st January. I was incredibly excited to tell the class and relieved that I will be able to finish out the year with our lovely class.

Week 8 Term 2

MIGRATION HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:
This week students will be using their migration interviews (that were all due today) to write a mini biography. In class we discussed the structure of the biography and what information should be included where. Biographies usually run in chronological order, so this is something we emphasised in class. Students will be given another session tomorrow morning to work on their biographies and ask any questions, however this will be mostly a home based task.

Students are allowed to type their biographies if they wish or they are able to hand write them on a seperate piece of paper. Good copies are not to go in their writing books since we will be displaying their work. I encourage students to decorate their work and include a picture if possible.

Weekly updates

Hi everyone,
just a reminder that Friday is a Pupil Free Day and that Monday is a Public Holiday so there will be no school on both of those days.

Next week is also Heritage Week. There will be a range of activities across the week including in class mapping our ancestery on a world map, dressing up in our traditional dress on Thursday and a bushdance on Friday. All Year 6 students will also be completing an interview with someone who has migrated to Australia. This may be a family member, family friend or even peer from school (we have many migrants in our class and year level). They will be given a week for this task and we will discuss it in more detail on Monday.

Today we listened to the first broadcast from Wembley FM run by Room 18 all about Migration. Students took notes in groups and sang along to the catchy tunes. Room 18 did a wonderful job and we can't wait to do our radio show, hopefully next.

Our radio show will be about the 7 Wonders of the World and 7 Wonders of Australia as these tie in nicely with our Inquiry Unit about "Events/People/Places that Shaped the World". I have asked students to please either take notes about their Wonder or print off information to help them next week with writing their report since iPads may still be down.

Have a very fun, but also safe, long weekend!
