SPELLING BEE Year 6 Term 1

Congratulations to all students from our class who participated in the Year 6 Term 1 Spelling Bee yesterday. There was some incredibly hard words that even some of the teachers were struggling to spell. An extra special mention to William who came 5th and Ava who came 3rd. What an absolutely phenominal achievement!

ANZAC Day ceremony and archives to search through

Today Wembley P.S held their ANZAC Day service. I was so proud of all the students in our class in the way they showed respect and were fantastic role models for the rest of the school. Well done to all students who did reading, spoke, sang or played in the band, you were all amazing!

David Burridge, who was our guest speaker, also told me about three places you are able to go to find information on relatives from WWI or WWII.

The first website, The National Archives of Australia, allows you to search for relatives from WWI for free as this was a gift to all Australians a few years ago. If you want to search for WWII then there is a fee because not all these documents have been made digital yet.

The second website if the Australian War Memorial site where once again you are able to search for your relatives, but it may not have as much information as the National Archives. Part of this website has the Red Cross records too, which you are able to search for family members who died to see how they passed away. Just a warning though, some of the information is quite distrurbing and gruesome so make sure a parent checks over before any student reads.

I hope they are helpful to some of you!

Week 8 and 9

Well, what a huge success the cake stall was today! The money is being taken to the bank later today and we will find out how much we have raised. I was absolutely amazed by how organised and motivated all the students were, it was incredibly impressive. Well done on all your hard work.

We also had our excursion to Scitech this week which proved very successful as well. Students have been buzzing all week about the fantastic activities such as the Planetarium, the digital microscopes, the Weather Show and more! Over the last couple of days our class have been making booklets reflecting on our excursion. I am very impressed with how many students have stepped up the effort that they have put into their presentation for this task. Well done everyone!

The spelling test has now been pushed back to next Friday (Week 9) to allow students a bit more time. This decision has been made across all Year 6 classes, so don't forget to practice!

Just a quick reminder to all students to stay safe over the Easter break. I hope you all have a wonderful time with your families and I can't wait to hear all about what adventures you got up to on Thursday.

Bunny Bottom Cookie Challenge

In class today students were given a fun Easter recipe that was very hard to read. Together in groups, they worked out what ingredients, materials and steps were needed and added a picture of what they thought the outcome would be. The aim of this activity was for students to practice skimming and scanning for important information, highlighting key points in different colours, re-writing steps in order clearly and to recognise that in their own writing being too wordy can be confusing for the reader.

Below is the original recipe in case anyone would like to make the cookies for Easter.

Bunny Bottom Cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup butter, softened

  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  •  Tub of frosting
  • Packet of marshmallows
  •  Any other lollies or cake decorations you would like

Directions

Prep 15 mins  Cook 10 mins

Ready in 25 mins

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  3. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.
  4. Once your cookies are cool, spread a thin layer of white frosting over the cookie.
  5. Cut a marshmallow in half and place on an angle either side for the bunny feet.
  6. Use either a mini marshmallow or cut a small piece of marshmallow for the tail
