Week 8 and 9

Well, what a huge success the cake stall was today! The money is being taken to the bank later today and we will find out how much we have raised. I was absolutely amazed by how organised and motivated all the students were, it was incredibly impressive. Well done on all your hard work.

We also had our excursion to Scitech this week which proved very successful as well. Students have been buzzing all week about the fantastic activities such as the Planetarium, the digital microscopes, the Weather Show and more! Over the last couple of days our class have been making booklets reflecting on our excursion. I am very impressed with how many students have stepped up the effort that they have put into their presentation for this task. Well done everyone!

The spelling test has now been pushed back to next Friday (Week 9) to allow students a bit more time. This decision has been made across all Year 6 classes, so don't forget to practice!

Just a quick reminder to all students to stay safe over the Easter break. I hope you all have a wonderful time with your families and I can't wait to hear all about what adventures you got up to on Thursday.

Bunny Bottom Cookie Challenge

In class today students were given a fun Easter recipe that was very hard to read. Together in groups, they worked out what ingredients, materials and steps were needed and added a picture of what they thought the outcome would be. The aim of this activity was for students to practice skimming and scanning for important information, highlighting key points in different colours, re-writing steps in order clearly and to recognise that in their own writing being too wordy can be confusing for the reader.

Below is the original recipe in case anyone would like to make the cookies for Easter.

Bunny Bottom Cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup butter, softened

  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  •  Tub of frosting
  • Packet of marshmallows
  •  Any other lollies or cake decorations you would like

Directions

Prep 15 mins  Cook 10 mins

Ready in 25 mins

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  3. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.
  4. Once your cookies are cool, spread a thin layer of white frosting over the cookie.
  5. Cut a marshmallow in half and place on an angle either side for the bunny feet.
  6. Use either a mini marshmallow or cut a small piece of marshmallow for the tail

Updates on our Inquiry

Students have been looking at events they feel have shaped the world over the past few weeks to make a class timeline. We will be adding to this timeline as we explore our unit further.

In Science and Geography we have been focusing on natural disasters. We have explored the tectonic plates and how these impact on natural disasters. Our class have looked at the different parts and types of volcanoes, as well as, made them in class last week. Please don't forget your lego for tomorrow's lesson on earthquakes!

Today students researched in groups the different elements that make up parts of Asia. They looked at countries, animals, climate, people, location on the map, natural resources, natural landmarks and other facts. We used World Book and Google to find appropriate information during our computer lab time. It was interesting how many students are still typing in lots of words for their search, or wanting an exact answer rather than reading the information. This was a great lesson in using key words for searching and skimming and scanning text for information. In the afternoon we shared our results with our groups. On Wednesday students will be using this information to compare Asia to Australia.

Below is a website students have asked me to put up that show which volcanoes are currently active in the world.

Swimming Carnival Run Down

Congratulations to everyone who turned up, competed and cheered their faction on at the swimming carnival yesterday. I was blown away by the effort and good sportmanship everyone showed on the day. It made me so proud to be your teacher! Thank you to everyone who was also so lovely to my son Kees, who I brought along for the day.

Below is a fabulous summary of the highlights written by Maddie and Cate.

 The Swimming Carnival

The swimming carnival was a huge success thanks to Mrs Day, Mr Stott, Mrs Edwards, the parent volunteers and most of all, Mr Stringer!  The mighty Stirling won with a leading score of 355 points, taking back the victory from Mitchell. Mitchell came second, with Forrest following close behind, and Dampier fourth. Our champion swimmers were Neve F and Campbell F. Our Year 6 runners up champions were Lucy K and Matthew B. Although everyone showed great sportsmanship, Dynamite Dampier was awarded the Spirit Shield!!We also had a very famous Olympic swimmer called Blaire E, Mrs Lucas asked her a lot of interesting questions about her swimming life and how much she trains per week. She gave us useful tips on how to swim well. Congratulations to all the competitors, we hope you had lots of fun!
